Rolf Jacob Sartorius, a boy born in Oklahoma was raised in Tulsa. He was brought to Virginia to be adopted after his parents became ill and were unable or unwilling to give care. Adoptive parents raised him within Reston, Virginia. He began singing in musicals at age seven. Vine was an American hosting service for video that provided brief-form videos. In 2017, Sartorius' lip-syncing videos were viewed by more than 8 million people. Since he was a victim of bullying, he believed social media could provide him with an way to escape. He told Musical.ly that he didn't feel very active. He was convinced that no one was watching him except the camera.
